The hike starts on a sandy, rocky single-track with moderate, uneven terrain, then crosses jagged lava fields that give the trail its unique desertgeology vibe. It descends into a wash with desert plants and occasional shade before steepening near Scout Cave, where a short rock scramble leads to the cave itself. The modest cave and nearby ledge offer sweeping valley views of St. George and the surrounding desert. Great for beginners and experienced trail runners, as the route can but cut short to accommodate any distance.
Chuckwalla to Scout Cave Trail is best rated as moderate for most trail runners:
- Distance: ~7 miles round trip runnable with some technical sections.
- Elevation: Moderate gain with a brief steep scramble near the cave (~650 feet gain/loss).
- Terrain: Sandy and rocky single-track, lava fields, desert washes, and a short rock scramble requires careful footing in spots.
Exposure: Mostly exposed with little shade sun protection and water recommended.

- The hike is often rated moderate if using the full Chuckwalla Scout Cave route; the core Scout Cave Trail on its own is often described as easy to moderate.
- Dog friendly (on leash) good for a hike with a well-behaved pup, but consider their paws on lava rock/sand in hot weather.
- Good for a quick hike from town perfect if you dont want a full-day outing, but still want to get outside and see beautiful desert/valley views, as the trail can be cut short to make an out and back of any distance.
The hike starts at the Chuckwalla Trailhead, located just off the main access road through the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve near St. George. Youll see a small parking area with a trail sign marking Chuckwalla Trail. From there, the path begins as a sandy, rocky single-track that winds gently through the desert landscape, gradually leading toward lava fields, washes, and eventually connecting to Scout Cave. Its easy to spot the start, and theres usually enough room to park a few cars or unload gear before heading onto the trail.
