Welcome to the 3rd annual Dragon’s Tail Stair Climb Challenge, our newest and most intense race, where only the fiercest runners will rise to the challenge! Set against the backdrop of towering steps, this unique competition is unlike anything you've seen before. Participants will face a brutal flight of 333 stairs—descending, then climbing as many times as they can.
Each lap completed brings them one step closer to victory, but only the last runner standing will claim the title of Dragon King or Queen. The race is on! A mountain of stairs awaits! Click the link above to register now!!
Race Information: This race will feature four categories: a 5K or 1K run/walk, the Sprint Challenge, the Endurance Challenge and the Knights Quest. The staircase will be closed to non-participants during the races.
Packet Pickup: Packet Pickup will be held on January 15th from 4pm-7pm at the Hangar on Tech Ridge (475 Donlee Dr., St. George, UT 84770). Packet pickup will also be available the morning of the event for a $10 charge. You can reserve your spot for that HERE(Opens in new window) if you need it.
New Endurance Challenge: Knights Quest: 6pm on January 15th. (6 Hour Challenge on 1K Stair Loop)
The initial 5 laps will start every 15 minutes. The time allowance for subsequent laps will be reduced by one(1) minute after every 5 laps. So, laps 1-5 you'll have 15 minutes per lap, 6-10 will be 14 minutes per lap with a reduction of one (1) minute every 5 laps. So, on laps 20-24, you will have only 9 minutes per lap. Racers will start at the top of the stairs, run the 1K loop and then ascend the staircase before the next lap starts. You MUST wait for the next start time before beginning again. All those who make it through Lap 24 will race the last lap to the top. The fastest male and female will be crowned the winners of the Knights Quest challenge. Everyone gets a finisher medal after the first lap and milestone awards all along the way. Come climb one time or climb them all!
5K and 1K Run/ Walk: These races will begin at 7:30 AM.
The 5K is not for the faint of heart! The race will start at the top of the Tech Ridge stairs, you'll run the rim trail, down the very steep Jerry Rice Trail, up the challenging Cloud Drive, down Jerry Rice again, and finish with the brutal 333 uphill climb on the Dragon's Tail stairs!
The 1K+(ok, it's about .8 miles), starts at the top of the staircase, runs across the rim to the Temple Quarry parking lot, down the bike path to the bottom of the staircase, and up the 333 steps to the finish line.
Sprint Challenge: This race will begin at 9:00 AM. The race will be run in heats, and whoever ends up with the fastest time wins bragging rights and a special prize!
Endurance Challenge: This race will begin at 10:00 AM. The initial 5 laps will start every 12 minutes. The time allowance for subsequent laps will be reduced by one(1) minute after every 5 laps. So, laps 1-5 you'll have 12 minutes per lap, 6-10 will be 11 minutes per lap with a reduction of one (1) minute every 5 laps. So, on laps 20-24, you will have only 8 minutes per lap. Racers will start at the top of the stairs, descend the staircase all the way, and then ascend the staircase before the next lap starts. You MUST wait for the next start time before beginning again. All those who make it through Lap 24 will be escorted to the bottom and then race to the top. The fastest male and female will be crowned the winners of the Dragon's Tail challenge. Everyone gets a finisher medal after the first lap and milestone awards all along the way. Come climb one time or climb them all! Completing the entire challenge means you've run a whole 5k of stairs!
But, wait, there's more! The Dragon's Tail Slayer Challenge. For the super-tough, you can sign up for all three races! If you do the 5K or 1K, the Speed Challenge, and the Endurance Challenge, you will get a discount on your registration and the all-exclusive Dragon's Tail Slayer Challenge Special Award. If you are going to do this challenge, you must finish the 5k or 1K before the start of the Speed Challenge.
